5 Things To Do Upon Arrival in Canada

Here are 5 important Things To Do As A Newcomer Upon Arrival in Canada to help you settle in and start your journey smoothly:

A Background Story

I was once a newcomer to Canada. In 2017, I came to Canada as an International Student from the Philippines. Moving to a new country with different customs, languages, and social norms can be challenging. Some of you may experience culture shock as you adapt to Canadian culture and lifestyle. This adjustment period can vary in length and intensity for each individual.

I graduated in 2019 and am now happy to be a Permanent Resident in Canada.

Here are the 5 things you need to do when you arrive in Canada:

1. Get your Social Insurance Number

Obtaining Social Insurance Number is important, you’ll need this to work legally in Canada. Whether you’re working on or off-campus as an international student, you are required to have a valid SIN.

Employers will ask about this document when hiring you, and you must provide it to receive payment for your work. You also need you SIN to file your taxes.

When I arrived in Canada I went to the nearest Service Canada Office to apply for my SIN. You’ll need to bring your passport and study permit with you.

2. Get a Phone or Cellular Plan

Having a cellular phone allows you to stay connected with family and friends, both locally and internationally. It’s essential for staying in touch, especially during your initial days in a new country when you may need to communicate frequently with your support network.

You also need your phone for navigation and information, like maps and GPS, if you want to explore without having to connect the wifi. Also when applying for jobs, employers may call you for initial interviews.

3. Get a Student Pass or Transit Card

Public Transportation is often most convenient way to travel within the city. A transit pass or student pass gives you access to the bus or trains in your city. Also since studying in Canada is expensive this is another way of saving money.

You can purchase them at your school campus or at the city community centre. Having a transit pass is more convenient as there is no need for you to cary coins. A monthly or semester long pass usually includes significant discounts.

4. Open a Canadian Bank Account

Opening a Bank Account in Canada is essentional for International Students. Firstly, it provides a secure and convenient way to manage your finances while studying abroad. With a Canadian bank account, you can easily deposit funds, withdraw cash, pay bills, and make purchases using a debit card or online banking services.

There’s a lot banking options where you can open a bank account, Scotiabank, TD Bank, RBC Bank or etc.

5. Apply for Medical Service Plan (MSP)

This is probably the most important thing you need to get right away as an International Student. Having health insurance coverage ensures that you have access to necessary medical services and healthcare facilities during your stay in Canada. Without it, you may face significant financial burdens if you require medical attention, as healthcare costs in Canada can be high.
